Call for Proposals

The Meg Quigley organization invites proposals for our 2025 Bassoon Symposium to be held January 9-12, 2025 at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our international multi-day event will welcome artists from a diverse array of cultural, pedagogical, and musical perspectives. Meg Quigley remains dedicated to celebrating the creativity, innovation, and excellence of our field through the broadest representations possible and welcomes the proposals of artists who share this spirit of inclusion and collaboration!

Tentative Schedule:

  • Proposal Submission Deadline: Sunday, June 1st, 2024

  • Symposium begins Thursday, January 9 and ends Sunday, January 12, 2025

Types of Proposals

  • Performance (up to 20 minutes)

    • Performances should consist of one piece or movements of a piece, but not a full recital. Works by composers from under-represented groups are encouraged.

    • Performances under 10 minutes will receive priority, but performances up to 20 minutes will be considered.

    • Collaborative pianists can be provided by Meg Quigley, but performers are also welcome to bring their own. Non-pianist collaborators may be available, but aren’t guaranteed.

    • All performers are expected to address the audience as a part of their presentation.

  • Studio Performances (10-25 mins)

    • Meg Quigley invites student ensembles at the university level to submit proposals for a showcase performance in an alternative symposium venue.

  • Panel (75 mins)

    • Panel discussions are a part of the fabric of the Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposia. Panel presentations gather a group of people to discuss a topic in front of an audience. The longer time frame allows for more in-depth coverage than in an individual session. Apply with an idea for a panel topic, and in the proposal text please indicate whether you want to host or participate and a list of other potential participants.

  • Performance Class (90 minutes)

    • Note: As an organization, Meg Quigley has made the decision to move away from the term “Masterclass.”

    • Teach a performance class to selected participants. Please include the genre of repertoire you would like to cover. This could be a type or work such as orchestra excerpts, avant-garde techniques, etudes, etc. We welcome your ideas!

  • Special Topics (20-25 minutes)

    • Present a lecture recital, teach a class on one of your unique reed-making techniques, tell us how to win an audition, or how to make amazing video content for social media! Be creative.

Proposal Reviewing

Immediately after the proposal submission deadline, proposals will be reviewed by the Meg Quigley team. The general guidelines which reviewers follow in evaluating proposals are the following:

  • Timeliness and importance of the topic: Attendees will have a diverse age range and experience level, but some presentations will have greater appeal than others. Is this topic likely to attract a wide variety of symposium participants? Is the topic one that will encourage discussion among attendees? Does it support the mission of the Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposium?

  • Presentational outlook: Based on the proposal, is it likely that the content will be presented in an effective, coherent manner that will be comprehensible and useful to the Meg Quigley audience? Are the key points of the presentation clearly outlined?

  • Because this is a curated event, Meg Quigley reserves the right to modify any accepted proposal according to programming needs and/or to better support our mission of inclusion and diverse representation.

  • In accordance with Meg Quigley's values and dedication to DEIB, repertoire or content that is found to be culturally/racially exploitative, disrespectful, discriminatory, appropriative, xenophobic, and/or intolerant is prohibited from conference programming.

Requirements for Presenting

When (If) your proposal is accepted for presentation at the Meg Quigley Symposium, please keep in mind that all presenters must register for participation in the symposium and attend in-person. Presenters are encouraged to attend the entire Symposium in order to foster the community that is central to the mission of Meg Quigley.
